A translator must know how to adapt the message to the culture of the target language, clearly, concisely, and in an acceptable style. This is only possible if he or she translates into his or her mother tongue and cultural background.

  A standard for translation services

A major step forward has been made on the path towards a European standard for translation work: in the autumn of 2004 the preliminary investigations relating to the pilot study were started.

This standard has an important role to play in encouraging accountability. As things stand, it can be seen that the market penalizes poor work on the « once bitten, twice shy » principle, but the client does not have access to very precise information to make his choice of translator.

This standard will give clear indications, making it possible to distinguish between the serious professional translator and the odd-job man: together, possibly, with a certification procedure, this will at least give the client the assurance that appropriate means are being used, even if it cannot provide an absolute quality guarantee. As for the translator, the standard will certainly have a positive effect on the quality of service that he supplies, provided that the standard is genuinely complied with.
