The localization of software means translating the user interface (instructions, menus, buttons, error messages, etc.) and the help files in order to adapt them to a country or a linguistic market: it is necessary to take into consideration the legal and cultural aspects of the targeted markets.
The users of the software packages are the only people in a position to judge the quality of the localized product. It must be perfectly translated whilst maintaining all the functions of the original version. All help functions, must, for instance, be user-friendly and beyond reproach in technical, functional and linguistic terms. Localization gives rise to operations of translation, re-engineering and adaptation of the functions, together with functional tests . As in the case of the localization of Web sites, the localization of software packages requires technical competences which are a complement to linguistic competences.
